Acrylic and impasto medium on canvas. Applied with a palatte knife. Approx A3 in size.

Another uni experiment involving acrylics. I hate acrylics. I just can't seem to get my head around them. They dry too quick, don't mix or spread the way i want to, and for me have always resulted in gloopy, crappy paintings. My painting styles at this time are much more suitable to oils. So for this project i chose to work in a completely different method than normal. By mizing the acrylics with an impasto medium, the paint layers become more three-dimensional and you're able to create actual texture with the paint. By applying this mix with a palatte knife instead of a brush you can create a messier, edgier work.

This is the first time i've ever painted like this. Somehow it came out well. I allowed myself to be more free and less obsessive than usual, although there is a certain amount of control needed to find a balance between building detail or overworking the paint.

Actor Steve Buscemi was used as a reference as I love his hollowed, lined face so much. Wokring time about 6 hours straight.
